House Impeachment Managers Make Their Case Against Former President Trump

On day two of the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, the House impeachment managers will begin to make their case that he incited insurrection and caused the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. They will have eight hours today and eight hours on Thursday (February 11) to convince skeptical Republican senators that Trump was responsible for the actions of his supporters when they stormed the Capitol Building during a joint session of Congress.

The managers will introduce new evidence to the Senate, including never-before-seen surveillance camera footage highlighting the "extreme violence" that happened during the riot inside the U.S. Capitol Building. They will argue that Trump incited the violence by refusing to accept the results of the presidential election and continuing to spread misinformation that the election was stolen and that President Joe Biden only won because of election fraud.

After the Democrats make their case, Trump's legal team will have 16 hours over two days to make their case the Trump was not directly responsible for the actions of his supporters.

The trial kicked off on Tuesday with a four-hour debate over the constitutionality of holding an impeachment trial for a president who is no longer in office. The Senate voted 56-44 in favor of holding the trial, with six Republicans crossing party lines to affirm the trial is constitutional.

It appears unlikely that there will be enough votes in the Senate to convict Trump. A conviction requires a two-thirds majority, which would need 17 Republicans to side with Democrats in voting to convict Trump.
