Stefan Sabol’s three-run triple in the fourth inning put Savannah in the lead, and the Sand Gnats went on to an 8-3 win over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Carlos Garcia reached first on an error, stole second and third and came home on a single by Elier Hernandez.
Savannah’s Yeixon Ruiz led off the fourth inning with a single and stole second base. Dominic Smith walked, and Matt Oberste grounded into a force play at second, leaving runners at first and third. Nelfi Zapata struck out, but Victor Cruzado walked, loading the bases. Sabol followed with a triple to center field, scoring all three runners. Sabol later scored on a single by Jeff Glenn, and the Sand Gnats led 4-1.
Each team added a run in the seventh to leave the score at 5-2. The Sand Gnats scored three in the ninth on a triple by Jonathan Johnson, a double by Glenn, a triple by Patrick Biondi and a single by Ruiz. Dex Kjerstad hit a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Legends their final run.
Savannah starter Robert Whalen (6-0) pitched the first seven innings and got the win. He allowed two hits, struck out seven batters and walked two. Jake Junis (8-6), the Legends’ starter, took the loss.
After an off day Wednesday, the Legends begin a four-game series in Charleston, West Virginia Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
