The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Basketball Team had an overall successful season this past year, finishing with an overall record of 20-12, a 3rd place finish in the Mid-South Conference, and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NAIA Division I Men’s National Championship Tournament in Kansas City.  Their accomplishments and hard work were noticed by the nation this past week as the Patriots find themselves ranked 20th overall on the Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll that was released on Wednesday afternoon.

Coming in at #20, the Patriots jump up four slots from the previous poll which had Cumberlands seeded at #24 going into the National Tournament.  However, with a huge upset victory in the first round of play over Rocky Mountain College 82-58, Cumberlands proved to themselves and everyone else the talent and chemistry that made them a force to be reckoned with.  NAIA National Champions Vanguard University earned the top spot of the prestigious list, while Emmanuel College, the athletic squad which knocked off UC in the Sweet Sixteen round of play, claimed the #2 spot.  Other notable MSC teams which finished in the Top 25 final poll included Pikeville at #5, Georgetown at #10, and St. Catharine at #18.

Although the Patriots season ended earlier than what they had hoped, the men improved as a unit throughout the course of the season and had many individuals recognized on and off the floor in the conference as well as nationally.  Head Coach Donnie Butcher and his staff are already hot on the recruiting trail for the 2014-2015 season as they will look to build upon a season that showed Patriot fans a glimpse of what is yet to come.  The Patriots do lose five seniors to graduation but will look to fill those positions with great young talent that can come in and make an impact immediately for the Patriots next season.
