A two-out throwing error by Delmarva shortstop Jared Breen allowed the winning run to score as the Lexington Legends got by the Shorebirds 5-4 in 10 innings Tuesday night.
With one out in the 10th, Elier Hernandez doubled to left field. He moved to third on an infield hit by Kenny Diekroeger. After Humberto Arteaga struck out for the second out, Dex Kjerstad hit a ground ball to Breen, whose low throw to first allowed Kjerstad to reach safely as Hernandez crossed the plate with the winning run.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dominique Taylor singled, stole second and came home on a single by Mauricio Ramos.
Delmarva scored all of its runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Drew Dosch singled and scored on a double by Creede Simpson. Simpson scored on a base hit by Chance Sisco to give Delmarva a 2-1 lead. A double by Austin Wynns moved Sisco to third, and both runners came home on Breen’s double to center field.
The Legends scored one run in the fifth inning on Kjerstad’s single, a wild pitch and a double by Alexis Rivera. Lexington tied the game on Alfredo Escalera’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.
Tim Hill (2-0), who entered the game in the top of the 10th, got the win. Jake Junis, who relieved starter Cody Reed at the start of the fifth inning, pitched five shutout innings in relief. He allowed three hits, struck out four batters and walked none.
Delmarva reliever Dylan Rheault (8-4) was the losing pitcher. Shorebirds starter Mitch Horacek struck out 10 batters in six and two-thirds innings, increasing his league-leading total for the season to 143.
Each team has won one game in the series, which concludes Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
