Rafael Rodriguez, John Polonius and Ty Ross each drove in three runs as the Augusta GreenJackets outscored the Lexington Legends 9-6 Thursday night.
The Legends scored first when Carlos Garcia singled in Fred Ford in the top of the second, but Augusta came back with four in the bottom half of the second. Tyler Horan led off with a walk, moved to second on Brandon Bednar’s single and scored on a single by Rodriguez as Bednar moved to third. Bednar scored as Ty Ross grounded into a force play at second. After Ryan Tuntland drew a walk, a wild pitch put runners at second and third. Polunius then doubled to left field, scoring two runs and giving the GreenJackets a 4-1 lead.
The Legends responded with two runs in the third. Ramon Torres singled with one out and scored on a double by Frank Schwindel. A double by Mauricio Ramos scored Schwindel, cutting Augusta’s lead to one at 4-3.
But Augusta scored two runs in the bottom of the third on Rodriguez’ RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Ross. The GreenJackets added another in the fourth when Polonius singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and came home on Horan’s single.
Frank Schwindel’s two-run homer for Lexington in the fifth inning left the score at 7-5 Augusta. The Legends moved to within a run in the eighth when Taylor singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on an infield out and scored on Arteaga’s sacrifice fly. But Augusta added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final 9-6 margin.
Augusta starter Carlos Diaz (4-5) got the win after working the first five innings. Legends starter Cody Reed (0-6) pitched four innings and took the loss.
